Do you have old things that feature scrap metal? Have you recently taken a visit to a metal recycling facility and were intrigued by all the ingenious parts you saw there? The truth is that metal is everywhere and can be repurposed and upcycled effortlessly with a bit of foresight and creativity. The easiest place to find metal ideal for upcycling is in the kitchen. Your kitchen is full scrap metal that can be used for everything from containers for herbs to lamps and fixtures.

We’ve compiled a list of great ideas to provide the right inspiration for DIY projects and help you reuse and upcycle old kitchen items. Many of the parts being talked about in this segment is most often discarded as useless items, or sold as scrap which land into recycling facilities. With the right ideas and a little creativity you can create works of art you could proudly display in your home, at the office, and beyond.

  • Towel rack: Towel racks are not just useful for hanging and drying towels. They are found near the kitchen sink or wash basins. You can upcycle them by using an old barn door handle and turn them into art-y pieces of hand towel holders.
  • Coat hanger: Speaking of racks, you can recycle forks into a hangers. Simply stick the head into the wall and twist it up to make room for hanging stuff.
  • Wall hooks: Use old spoons for the hook. Big spoons can have their hands pinned to the wall and the spoon could hold nails, jewelry, pins, and any other tiny pieces.
  • Rack for pots and pans: Have you seen those pans and pots hanging from the ceiling in the center of the kitchen? Well, you could recycle an old fence, hang it horizontally and place hooks on them to hang your utensils, pots, and pans.
  • Lamp and light fixtures:
    • Turn an old metal bucket into a lamp.
    • Use old bulbs and turn them into candles by simply removing the wire intestines from the bulb, fill it with oil, shove a thread into that oil – leaving a bit on top to be lit.
    • Use old wine bottles or old coffee cans and put Christmas lights inside.
    • Repurpose old barn wood by pinning it on the ceiling and having old chicken feeders turned into lamps.
  • Wind chime: Get an old water pitcher, hang it upside down and wire old spoons and forks from the mouth to create a soulful chime.
  • Knife block: Fill skewers into a box and pop your knives in it after each use.
  • Storage unit: If you have an old mini fridge, tidy up the insides and keep it under the TV to hoard remotes, game consoles,  CDs and other paraphernalia.  
  • Ribbon organization:  Used and empty paper towel rolls can be repurposed to be used as ribbon holders. These ribbon holders can stand alone or placed in container. You can also upcycle paper towels holders to hold ribbons.
  • Jewelry organizer: The day you need to say goodbye to your old cupcake tray remember that you don’t have to throw it out yet. Even though it may not be as good for baking, you can definitely repurpose it as a tray to hold all your delicate jewelry. Use some metal paint and place it on your dresser for chic and casual style.

  • Silverware holder: Coffee cans are perfect scrap metal that can be divided the cutlery into knives, spoons and forks. This could be a great holder to keep on the table at dinner parties or lunch soirees; or simply hang them on the wall near the dining area of your home.
